Gods

As a witch, I worship the Horned God, also known as the Great God or the Great Father. He is the husband, Lord to my Lady, the Goddess. They are the ancient gods of my faith, who have been called by many names since man first revered deities. My Horned God has been known as Herne the Hunter and the Green Man in our British Isles; Pan of the Greeks; Osiris of Egypt; Cernunnos of the Celts; Faunos of the Romans or Pashupati of India; many names in many cultures. His thousand names and identities all describe the Horned God, who is the symbol of potent, masculine energy, counterpoint to the female energy of the Triple Goddess. He is the God of the masculine forces of nature, its power and strength, of forests, animals and the hunt. He is strength and virility, as symbolised by his stag-like horns. My Lord, in sexual union with my Lady, the Goddess, brings fertility and abundance to the land at midsummer, Litha, when his power is strongest, dying in autumn and reborn each spring, mirroring the seasons, his life sacrificed to bring the seasons, life and plenty for mankind.

My Lord, though harnessing and embodying the wildness and raw power of nature's might, has a masculine gentleness and compassion, he is the bringer of life. He is the eternal hunter, as man is, and also the hunted animal. Although he is sacrificed, like a beast of the field, that we may live, he takes life too. He is symbolised by the sun as my Lady is by the moon. And he pursues her, as the sun follows the moon. His life is echoed in the yearly pattern of the sun's voyage through the seasons, the eternal cycle of birth in spring, procreation, parting, extinction, and restoration in rebirth.

My Lord has been confused in the past by Christians, with the devil, he is not the devil. But my Lord is half animal and half man, nature and mankind united as one. His horns also represent his rule over the natural world and woodlands; his half man and half beast duality are associated with the ram and bull who are the companions of the Goddess. His horns are also symbolic of the moon, his Goddess lover, wife and mother. In my worship, nature, all life, the earth, the seasons and what we are as human beings, is encompassed in the lives of the life givers, my Lord and his Lady, who live, love and die for us.
