Guardian Angels

Since the first man schlepped his way over the Savannahs, looking for a ready meal dinner, he has been dreaming of someone to make that trek of life easier for him, someone who would peel that grape and drop it into his mouth, someone who would help, protect and comfort him. This lucky person we now entitle 'wife.' But for man this wife woman was not enough, he wanted someone to be on call 24/7 even when wife was absent for grape peeling duties, someone to come to his aid at any moment should danger or nasty things, rear their heads during his mid morning bask and tummy scratch. Man dreamt of wondrous things and the wondrous things looked down on him, if they hadn't already existed man might have thought them up, between eating and scratching, but perhaps not, scratching and adjusting his manly parts did not leave man much time in the day. These wonders, or Angels as we now call them, watched man and knew their workload would be doubled. The Bible describes how the Angels sang with heart swelling joy when the earth was first created, a new blue jewel, a paradise hanging in the firmament but it would be understandable if they were cautious about our entrance to existence.

Who is your local Angel and does he like you? Does he accept dinner invitations?

Since they were first recorded in the Bible 3,500 years ago, Angels have been described as messengers of God. The foremost Angel Is Michael, who presides over Angels, Seraphs and Cherubs. Do not be misled into thinking these mighty beings are fluffy disneyesque creatures, the flighted cross dressers of popular imagination. In other newer books of sacred knowledge such as the Koran, Angels are not simpering, effeminate, cutie pie, and whimsical creatures. They are very powerful, mighty princes of God, divine beings of splendour, princes of the supernatural world, spirit beings who can see straight through you and exert great power for you or against you, should they wish. They are a much higher level of being than us, so give them serious respect at all times, 'that it may go well with you.'

In the Bible's book of Daniel, Daniel the prophet encounters the Angel Gabriel.

'I also proceeded to raise my eyes and see, and here was a certain man clothed in linen, with his hips girded with gold of U´phaz. 6 And his body was like chrys´o·lite, and his face like the appearance of lightning, and his eyes like fiery torches, and his arms and the place of his feet were like the sight of burnished copper, and the sound of his words was like the sound of a crowd. 7 And I saw, I Daniel by myself, the appearance; but as for the men that happened to be with me, they did not see the appearance. However, there was a great trembling that fell upon them, so that they went running away in hiding themselves.' An awe inspiring sight indeed!

Angels were created before the earth, they are male beings, not unisex, all first creation was male, and the female is the improved new version of being who encapsulates the best of mankind. Whichever your gender, know that the Angels will help you if you are deemed worthy. If you don't know if you are worthy, try living your life with the thought, would an Angel do this? If you think they would not, bin the idea, unless of course it's something harmless, legs up in front of the box with a pizza, a pastime Angels are not known to indulge in. But Angels are recorded in the Bible as enjoying food and good company on rare occasions. Abraham, from the Bibles' book of Genesis, was sitting cooling off at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day, when he saw God standing off at a distance amongst some trees, transubstantiated into the form of a man with two other men. The two other men were Angels, also transubstantiated into human form. Abraham ran up to them, bowed to the ground and asked them to refresh themselves with him by partaking of some lunch and a drink.

“God, if, now, I have found favour in your eyes, please do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be taken, please, and you must have your feet washed. Then recline under the tree. 5 And let me get a piece of bread, and refresh your hearts. Following that, you can pass on, because that is why you have passed this way to your servant.” At this they said: “All right. You may do just as you have spoken.” 6 So Abraham went hurrying to the tent to Sarah (his wife woman) and said: “Hurry! Get three seah measures of fine flour, knead the dough and make round cakes.” 7 Next Abraham ran to the herd and proceeded to get a tender and good young bull and to give it to the attendant, and he went hurrying to get it ready. 8 He then took butter and milk and the young bull that he had got ready and set it before them. Then he himself kept standing by them under the tree as they were eating.'

In return for Abraham and Sarah's delicious lunch and life long good service, God told Sarah she would have a child in one years time. Sarah choked with laughter at the absurdity of the idea, she was very old and way past menopause and God turned on her asking was anything impossible for him? Frightened, Sarah denied laughing and God retorted that she had! But he told her nonetheless she would have a child. She did. In fact the Bible warns us to be welcoming to strangers because, 'you may be entertaining Angels unaware.'

Whether Angels have wings is a question only they can answer but it seems that wings are at least a helpful symbol so that our ancestors could understand the speed at which Angels may travel. Angels, it seems, know neither space nor time, they can go anywhere in our world in an instant, unhampered by opposing winds or the vagaries of transport timetables and leaves on the line.

Super heroes and Super guardians

Most comic fiction super heroes are based, one might conjecture, upon the role that Angels play; supernatural feats of strength, instantly able to help those in need and prevent disaster. Superman is the super hero who is the most obviously Angelic in inspiration with his flight and his role of being a guardian to those in danger. But we don't need super heroes, Angels have been there for us since our first walkabout, with the Cherub who locked us out of Eden until the flood and it's destruction, posted as he was, with his fiery sword revolving, a heavenly bouncer. Sometimes the Angels admonish us, it's clear.

Statistics have found that 75% of American youth believe in Angels. We all want to believe there is a higher force watching out for us and luckily, in this at least, humankind is right. The anecdotal evidence for Angelic intervention is overwhelming. Even our news media keeps us abreast of Angelic assistance with reports such as the recent article in a local UK newspaper, involving Roger La Vern, a musician with the Tornados and Billy Fury in the 1950's. The 70-year-old La Vern fell as he was walking toward a barrier besides a busy road. A stranger appeared, picked him up and supporting him, carried his things for the mile journey home. When La Vern arrived home, he turned around to thank the stranger; the man had vanished, unheard, unnoticed. La Vern is quoted as saying.

"I have led a crazy life but after this I have started trying to be a better boy. My ex-wife said it was my guardian Angel."

One of many other thousands in the UK alone, is the account of the woman, who late at night, descended warily into the underpass at Waterloo Station in London. She did not usually take this route but felt forced by circumstance to do so on this occasion. As she entered the gloom, three drunken men followed her down. She walked faster, terrified, the men pulled back and left her alone. Later that night they assaulted another woman. When caught by the police, the drunks were asked why they had let the first woman go, they answered that they had seen two men walking beside her. There had been no men accompanying her. Her guardian Angels though, had made an appearance.

So what are the names of the Angels? The Bible gave us Michael and Gabriel but what of some of the others, some because there are myriad upon myriad of the Angelic host. Zadkiel is thought to be the Angel of wealth, abundance, wisdom and success; Sandalphon is the Angel of victory; Haniel, love, happiness and beauty; Mumiah is the Angel of healing; Seraphiel deals with peace and spirituality; Ithuriel helps with change and self development; Racimiel is the offerer of comfort and compassion. Metatron is the Angel of psychic powers.

Doreen Virtue, the very popular proponent of Angel therapy, theorises that we all have our guardian Angel, but need to connect with them and get in tune with them to receive their guidance and blessings. But it seems clear that to be loved by our Angels, we need to find and enrich that side of us that is most like them, to see their light, and let it shine within us and then surely they will see us and help us when we are in need. So next time a stranger gets in your way as you commute or you get an unexpected knock at the door, smile, be open to the possibility that you may be meeting Angels.

Guardian Angels rule, OK!
