Jupiter has always been thought of as mighty, it is a show stopping, dazzling bravura of a planet, set with luminously vivid coloured clouds, dramatically sizzling storms and it's gigantic size - being the most colossal planet in the solar system. It is so huge, that if someone were able to put all the planets of our solar system together in one bag, the bag would still not be as enormous as Jupiter. Jupiter has a complexion problem, called, by the insensitive, the Great Red Spot, be glad teenagers that no-one has yet mapped and named the eruptions on your skin's surface. This Great red spot is actually a perpetual storm so gigantic it is even bigger than earth and yet is a mere pimple of red upon Jupiter's surface. Jupiter is lavish with moons; the largest four are Ganymede, Io, Europa, and Callisto. Although Jupiter has a faint ring of stardust around it, films from the Voyager 1 mission, show that from space, Jupiter appears like a great red marble ball, it's atmospheric bands sweeping around it like the striations of a living marble skin. This celestial god of the planets is the fourth and sometimes the third brightest in our night skies and can be seen at times even in the day.

This magnificent planet was duly noted by our forebears, the Romans naming it Jupiter, appropriately making it their king of gods. Jupiter was the defender and champion of the gods, the other planets, Venus, Mars etc. and he was symbolised by a thunderbolt. Curiously paralleling this ancient belief, modern astronomy has found that Jupiter the planet, actually does have a vital protective function for the earth. Jupiter draws into itself or propels asteroids and comets outwards, shooting these space hazards out of the solar system, which otherwise might impact with earth. Jupiter is like some huge heavenly magnet, set to attract to itself, or repel all danger and so protect and defend our earthly home in space. Jupiter may not actually be a god, but it's scarcely credible that its protective role is mere chance, God created it's function and so it serves the purpose ascribed to it by the farsighted Romans.

Astrologically speaking, Jupiter is the planet that rules lucky Sagittarius, who is gifted by having all the planet's most positive qualities. They are lucky not only because Jupiter has protective associations but also because it is associated with good fortune per se. In Cancer, Jupiter brings out the nurturing, parental side. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, of broadening all horizons, of the mind; in quests for knowledge and philosophising; in the physical realm in seeking new journeys and new places and sorry the bad news, expansion of the body - hide those puddings from Sagittarius.
