Mortar and Pestle
A pestle is a heavy club-like implement with which I crush, mix and grind magical ingredients for spells and magic rituals, into a very solid and durable bowl or mortar. The mortar and pestles traditional use being in all kitchens, was very useful for witches, who could use one for her magic preparations and remain undetected. The pestle may have a wooden handle and heavy porcelain or ceramic head, or it maybe made of marble, stone, iron, steel, and basalt or sometimes is made entirely of wood. The pestle and mortar must be made of smooth non-porous material so that no traces of the pestle or mortar become combined with ingredients during heavy pounding or grinding. Since Roman times we've been using a pestle and mortar in the kitchen and the roman poet Juvenal wrote of a 'mortarium' and 'pistillum' in the preparation of medicine, which later became the symbol of apothecarys and pharmacists. A mortar and pestle is still a very handy tool for the modern witch and I like to use it to crush and mix ingredients, such as fresh or dried herbs, leaves, flowers, resins, seeds and roots for love potions and love spells while mentally projecting the result of my love spell as I work.
