Ostara

The Wiccan witches year is full of celebration, thankfulness to the gods and goddesses who we believe provide us with life and bring all good things. Ostara is one of these moments of reflection and celebration, when we pause to remember, give praise and thankful prayers to the deities, as this is the time when we mark spring, the vernal equinox in March. This time is also marked in the Christian calendar as Lady Day and Alban Eiler in the Druidic calendar and you may already celebrate it unknowingly, as Easter. Ostara heralds spring days and nights are of equal length so we mark it with a sabbat, a progression in the of the Wheel of the Year. The Wheel of the Year is our term for the rolling, cyclical passage of time and life, all life being cyclical, birth, life and death, as are the seasons and the lives of our horned god and our goddess.

Ostara is celebrated on around the 21st of March in the northern hemisphere and around the 23rd of September in the southern hemisphere. We celebrate mother earth or the mother goddess, fertile giver of life and bounty to us all and her sacred marriage to her lover, the sun god who has revivified with spring, after his winter death. We trust their union will bring a fertile ripening of nature, crops and the blessing of birth to every kind, including animals.  Life has returned to the earth, the fields, the gods and hope and spring light shines in our celebration.

The following full moon belongs to Ostara and the Saxon lunar goddess Eostre, goddess of fertility. She is symbolised by the rabbit and the egg, procreation and new life and from her the word oestrogen is derived.

To help adapt our ancestors to Christianity, the Church embraced the symbols, name and timing of Eostre when Easter is celebrated.  Whatever your beliefs, Ostara is a time when we all benefit from the goddess and god's union that brings us spring, new life, new hopes, when mother earth herself smiles upon us all.
