The Wand

The wand is a slender stick usually made of ivory, metal, crystal or most often in witchcraft, wood. The wand was not only used for magical purposes and its origins are in the word rod or virge. From ancient Egyptian times the wand has been used as a staff of office, as in the now ceremonial role of Black Rod in the British houses of parliament and the monarchs symbols of power, the mace and sceptre. The ancient Egyptian gods often were depicted carrying rods or wands to symbolically show their power. Even cavemen are painted in caves as carrying staffs, presumably as in, 'I am powerful and will hit you with my rod if you should think of disobeying me.'

In ancient Greco-Roman mythology the god Hermes used a wand called a caduceus. The caduceus was a short rod, or herald's staff, entwined by two serpents, their coils twisted into the shape of the double helix. Wings sprouted from just below the top of the wand. In those days this wand represented protection for thieves, merchants and ushering the dead but you may be familiar with it now, as the universal symbol for medicine. Some posit the idea that wands originated with the shaman's beating drumstick during his magic rituals, in Central Asia and Siberia. Wands or staves of six to eight foot are also used during freemason's rituals.

We witches often like to harvest our wands from our favourite trees, different woods have different magical properties and when we do, we leave a small offering to the tree to show our gratitude. We use the wand to cast a circle or to channel energy; to invite an energy or gently foster positive energy into a situation. We believe that the wand represents fire or air.
