Zoomancy is divination by the appearance of an animal or the behaviour of one. A black cat crossing your path for example is considered to be very lucky.
Oscar the cat, who was adopted as a kitten and grew up in the third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in America had an uncanny knack for predicting death. Once Oscar senses all is not well he sniffs around the patient and then sits with the until they pass away. HIs accuracy is such he has been right 25 times.
Most of the patients who get a visit from the cute looking, grey-and-white cat are too poorly to realise Oscar has paid them a visit, their relatives are thankful for the advanced warning, as it usually gives them a chance to say goodbye to their loved one.
Cats are considered to be very lucky - the lucky black cat, and the idea a cat has 9 lives was already in existence in 16th century:
No wyfe, a woman hath nyne lyves like at cat.

It’s not known where the idea originally came from, although one early reference directly links it with witches:

It is believed a cat uses its whiskers as ‘dowsing rods’ to detect a mouse in a field.
